Go-Kart Accident Kills 12-Year-Old Boy

RICHLAND, Wash.--A day of go-kart racing turns tragic at the Horn Rapids Kart Track.

12-year-old Kenneth McKinster or "KJ" of Fairview, Oregon somehow went off the track and into a wire fence 180 feet away.

He died on the way to Kadlec Medical Center. Tri-City Kart Club leaders are calling it a freak accident.

Those who knew him say he was a great kid with a big heart.

"We used to go swimming at the hotels when we travel," says Artie Carpenter, friend of KJ. He was the nicest kid. We are really going to miss him."

"This is one..our kids' friends," mentions Jesse Brown, Tri-City Kart Club Board of Directors. And to see this happen. To see that little guy down there like he was is just... it's heart-wrenching."

In memory of KJ, all races at the track were suspended this weekend.

The Benton County Coroner says McKinster died from a deep wound to the neck as well as a broken neck.
