Police Use MySpace To Increase Patrols

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.-- Richland police say most of the local bars in our area already have a MySpace page.

Now this makes it easier for police to figure out the nights when they have to watch out for bigger crowds and a possible increase in crime. Police say these sites list their upcoming events on a regular basis.

One of the most popular MySpace pages visited by police is the one for Club Paradise in Richland. Another popular site is the Towncrier.

"It's amazing sometimes that people will forget that anything you put on the Internet is basically open for public access. If Club Paradise is going to have a big thing they're advertising and the Internet is real live with all this stuff, then that allows us to increase our staff," said Captain Mike Cobb, with the Richland Police Department.

Police also say often times they use the Internet for more than just adding patrols. They see all types of behavior. Everything from people planning underage drinking parties, to graffiti crimes.
