PASCO, Wash.-- Mayra Castillo is very excited, but still a bit in shock.
She wrote an essay about how her life has been as a migrant student. Whatever she said seem to win her a coveted spot into the 2008 Space Academy program in Alabama.
Only fitting how the school is named after Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic astronaut. Mayra is known by her teachers as being a persistent, but quiet girl.
That all changed when she learned she'd be packing her bags.
"I couldn't believe it," says Mayra Castillo. I was very excited. I couldn't believe I got chosen. I didn't really expect to get chosen."
"We announced it to everybody here at the school," says Jacqueline Ramirez, principal at Ochoa Middle School. We came on the loud speaker and called the Superintendent and everybody is just really excited."
Mayra leaves for space academy in Huntsville, Alabama on Thursday, July 17th. She'll be shooting for the stars for one week.
