CWU Baseball team ranked eighthPosted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Central Washington University baseball team is ranked eighth in this week's official NCAA Division II West Region poll, released Thursday morning by the NCAA national office.
The Wildcats, 19-14 overall and 13-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, are one of two teams from the GNAC listed among the top eight in the region. Western Oregon (27-13, 15-5 GNAC) is ranked sixth this week.
UC San Diego and Sonoma State are the top two teams in the West Region this week, and those two schools square off in a four-game conference series in La Jolla, Calif., this weekend. Also listed in this week's ranking are Metro State (Colo.), Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State (Calif.) at positions three through five, respectively, followed by Western Oregon, Mesa State (Colo.), and CWU. The NCAA only ranks the top eight teams in each region for baseball.
The poll released by the NCAA is the official poll for determining postseason berths. The top six teams in the final regional ranking, assuming the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) champions are among the top six, will qualify for the postseason. The GNAC does not have an automatic berth in the regional tournament.
Central Washington steps out of conference play this weekend, hosting Dixie State College of Utah in a four-game series scheduled for Saturday (Apr. 19) and Sunday (Apr. 20) at Tomlinson Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday and noon (PDT) on Sunday.
