Umatilla Diversifying Gaming Economy

Posted: Updated:

UMATILLA INDIAN RESERVATION, Oreg.- The Umatilla Indian Reservation wants to expand away from gaming as their main economic driver.

Gaming has long been the main business there, now they're jumping into the technology sector.

The tribe is banding together with Accenture to open Cayuse Technologies.

The company will hire and train about 450 new employees to develop new software.

They'll also run a customer service center for those programs.

Tribal leaders say it's the perfect chance to start expanding the tribal economy and give people in the area a chance to work in big business without leaving the area.

"Been in gaming for several years, but we feel we need to diversify our economy here and provide more employment opportunities for our people," said Trustees Chair Antone Minthorn

The business is part of a joint venture with the worldwide consulting firm Accenture.

It's the first time ever the firm has partnered with an indian reservation for new business.
