Boaters Play Big Role Defending Waterways

KENNEWICK, Wash.--Approximately 85% of our nation's ports and maritime structures are privately owned and operated.

Since, the federal government admits it cannot protect every potential threat in the small vessel community, it's relying on boaters to watch out for anything unusual.

The government warns that terrorists could use small boats to smuggle weapons of mass destruction or even use the boat as a weapon itself to destroy various assets.

Increased communication and sharing of information between boaters will help identify high-risk concerns for law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard.
