Washington - Bring your walking shoes to work today, it's the 2nd annual National Walk at lunch day.
The walk is sponsored by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield association. The goal is to get people healthy on the job.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention along with the U.S. Department of Health Services are both promoting the walk. They say more than 50% of American adults do not get enough physical activity. The cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is nearly $1,000 dollars for every family in America, every year. If 10% of adults began walking regularly, $5.6 billion dollars in heart disease costs could be saved nationwide.
They recommend walking 30 minutes a day, three days a week and to drop the fast food, bust out of the office and enjoy some spring air while getting some exercise.
