Yard Sale Brings in Big Money for Cancer CenterPosted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Large crowds were lined up before the sale even started this morning ready to spend their money on a good cause.
"This morning we thought we were going to need a security team and we just about ran over, but its just fun and exciting," said event planner Stacy Gardner.
The money raised from this morning's large crowds will go to the North Star team in the American Cancer Society's relay for life event coming up in may.
The North Star Lodge Cancer Center usually goes after businesses to sponsor them in the 24-hour walk, but this year they took a different approach.
"What we decided to do here is rather than get pledges we sponsored all these fundraising events like the Yard Sale we're having today," said Beth Parker of North Star Lodge.
North Star relies on funds raised from events like this to help pay for the added care and attention they give their patients.
"We can't do the extra stuff that we can do without the support of the community," said Gardner.
It wasn't just shoppers who stopped by today.
Gardner says, "We've had quite a bit of cancer supporters, particularly to donate just for the cancer center."
For those who were looking to come away from the sale with something they had plenty to choose from.
"All this stuff came from donations from our employees here, from patients here, just about anyone who walks in that door is more than willing to donate," said Gardner. The sale is only happening today and whatever wasn't sold by two o'clock was donated to the northwest center in Yakima.
