Power Outage May Have Lead to Downtown Accident

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A power outage in downtown Yakima may have lead to a car accident this afternoon. The outage caused the stoplight at Third and Yakima Avenue to stop working.

Crews fixing the light say that may have caused a taxicab driver to run the light and t-bone this jeep, flipping it on its side.

Dan Nickoloff works on traffic signals for the city and says it was a planned power outage.

"They disconnected some transformers so the signal was dead. Officers were out here after that they called me and the sign shop came and put temporary signs up," said Nickoloff.

People who live in the area say drivers were missing or ignoring those stop signs all day.

There were only minor injuries reported from the accident and police have not said if anyone was ticketed.

The stoplight is working again and traffic is back to normal.
