BENTON CITY, Wash.-- A man is accused of running over an 11-year-old girl in Benton City Saturday afternoon. He is in jail, accused of Vehicular Assault.
His family is speaking out about the incident. They say their son told them he was driving down Corral Creek Road when he heard something hit his windshield. Benton County Deputies say Mason told them he didn't see the girl. Mason's father says his son told the sun was in his eyes.
Tony's father, Harold Mason, says, "He went up a little ways, turned around, came back, and there was a girl in the middle of the road. He put on his hazard flashers, pulled up and blocked the traffic, got out, called 911, and he stayed out with her until help got here and our prayers are out with her."
Amy Gahagan, although Benton City locals say she also goes by the last name of Marshall, remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle as of Monday night.
Tony Mason has been charged with Vehicular Assault and the incident remains under investigation. Police say drugs and alcohol might be involved.
