Wapato School Teacher Commits SuicidePosted: Updated:
WAPATO, Wash. -- A Wapato Middle School teacher commits suicide while he is under investigation for having possible improper relations with a student. The allegations came from emails Michael Arreola sent to a female student last week. We don't know the nature of those emails, but we do know it was enough for school administrators to put Arreola on paid leave.
The Yakima County Coroner confirmed today Michael Arreola died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police were just beginning the investigation when all this happened. They hadn't even questioned Arreola yet.
Police have been in contact with the female student, but they aren't releasing any details from those conversations.
Friends found Arreola yesterday morning at 10:45 in a home in the 1800 block of Lateral 1 road.
Wapato Superintendent Becky Imler said she didn't want to sensationalize this by giving an on camera interview, but she did release a statement to us saying her deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Arreola's family and friends and that they have been providing counseling for students and staff and that will continue into tomorrow.
The superintendent would not comment any further or give any details about the investigation. You can read her full statement below.
Superintendent Becky Imler's statement:Yesterday, I was notified by Wapato Police that one of our Middle School teachers committed suicide. I send my deepest sympathies to Mr. Arreola's family and friends. Yesterday we spent the day preparing counseling and support for our staff and students. We will continue providing counseling for staff and students tomorrow. Out of respect for Mr. Arreola's family, I will not comment any further.
