YAKIMA, Wash.-The class of 2008 is required to pass the reading and writing portion of the WASL in order to graduate and a list of those who passed and failed went out on Tuesday.
Fortunately, many students passed the test and will be graduating, but other students won't be receiving their diplomas this June.
One mother says her daughter passed all of her high school courses, but this one test is standing in the way of her graduation. Her daughter took the test three times already and has two more chances to pass.
The Director of Assessment for the Yakima School District says if students don't pass they still have other options. Students can enroll in school in the fall and prepare to take the WASL again. Students can also substitute parts of the WASL with approved options, which are collections of eight to twelve work samples showing the students knowledge of the material.
Students who failed the test still have time to graduate. The class of 08' can take the WASL through August 14th. However, they only have five chances to pass.
