Two Arrested in Gang ShootingPosted: Updated:
TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A shooting in Toppenish this morning caused a scare for kids just arriving at Kirkwood Elementary. Police arrested two suspects this afternoon who are believed to be responsible for the shooting.
The victim is a 16-year-old student from eagle high school believed to be a Surreno gang member. He was shot in the upper back and taken to Yakima Regional Hospital. We don't know his condition at this time.
The shooting happened this morning on Monroe Street just a block away from Kirkwood Elementary. Police say two rival Norteno gang members drove by and shot the victim as he was walking to school. The victim managed to make his way to Kirkwood Elementary School where someone was able to call 911.
The school was then put on immediate lockdown.
"We went into our lockdown mode, which we practice twice a year so we were prepared for it. We had the busses hold kids for a bit and then it was all cleared but the police and we went ahead and started bringing them in," said principal Anastasia Sanchez.
The school returned to a normal class schedule today, while police began searching for those responsible.Tips from witnesses lead police to a house in Buena where two men were arrested and numerous weapons were recovered. One of the suspects is a juvenile. Police say they are continuing to investigate.
