Yakima Police Sit on Roof for Special Olympics

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Lieutenant Mike Merriman of the Yakima Police Department took a break from riding in his squad car to hang out on the roof of top foods.

It's all part of the cop on top program to raise money for the Special Olympics.

For a combined time of 32 hours the lieutenant sits on top of the grocery store using a fishing pole to lower a bucket for shoppers to deposit money in.

"We get all sorts of responses. I think some people don't know what to think, but it definitely gets their attention so that's good," said Officer Joel Hansen.

Yakima Police Lieutenant Merriman says sitting up there today wasn't so bad with the sun being out. Yesterday he had to brave some rain and wind which made it a little more difficult to control his fishing pole.
