Women's Wrestling Starting at YVCC

YAKIMA, Wash. --  Yakima Valley Community Colllege has been working to become Title 9 compliant, meaning equal sports programs for both women and men. If they don't become compliant, they could lose government funding.

They recently added a women's soccer team, and also faced the possibiltiy of dropping the wrestling program.

The pictures and wrestling awards line the walls at YVCC but they are all men. Soon, the faces of women will grace the halls as well.

Coaches say they have already received 7 verbal commitments from athletes across the country.

Due to a Title 9 YVCC complaint that requires both men and women to paricipate preportionally in college sports, YVCC has had to try to increase its number of female athletes. But, school officials say the women's wrestling program won't have much of an impact in that respect.

School leaders say they would have to double the number of female athletes while keeping the same number of males just to get the numbers proportional.

While the administration continues to fight over Title 9, coaches are just happy men and women will hit the mats.
