UW softball assistants fired

Associated Press - June 10, 2008 11:35 PM ET

SEATTLE (AP) - University of Washington softball coach Heather Tarr says she has fired assistant coaches Eve Gaw and Geoff Hirai, but refused to say why.

Tarr says she informed the Huskies team today at a meeting of her decision.

The 32-year-old Gaw and Tarr played together at Washington from 1994-97. When Tarr took the reins from ousted coach Teresa Wilson prior to the 2005 season, Tarr promptly hired Gaw.

Gaw left a successful program at Florida State to join her former teammate at UW.

Hirai was a classmate's of Tarr's at Redmond High School and oversaw the Huskies infield for three seasons.

The Huskies finished third at the 2007 Women's College World Series, but this season's team posted a 30-25-1 record, including 7-14 in the Pac-10. The 2008 Huskies were ousted by Houston from postseason play in the regional round by scores of 2-0 and 2-1.
