Lincoln: WA students don't want to hear about Mariners

Associated Press - June 15, 2008 1:35 PM ET

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - Seattle Mariners Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Howard Lincoln didn't have much to say about his beleaguered American League team when he was keynote speaker at Western Washington University's commencement.

Following a 5-2 loss to the Washington Nationals on Saturday night, the Mariners had the worst record in baseball at 24-44 and were in last place 16 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.

Lincoln told more than 2,000 students who got their degrees at jampacked Carver Gym on the Bellingham university's campus on Saturday: "Our team has performed so poorly this season that you probably don't even want to hear about them."

Two or three people responded by clapping.

Lincoln is a university trustee.
