YAKIMA, Wash.- Chemicals in your shower curtain could be making you sick.
Some shower curtains release the harmful chemical Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC.
PVC is usually used in plastic piping and cables but it's also used to give your shower curtain that new smell. The toxins are released when you install your curtain and can last up to a month, causing nausea, breathing problems, and even nerve and organ damage. The news has stores like Target pulling PVC products from their shelves and the public checking twice to make sure the toxic curtains aren't in their homes.
Concerned parent Johnny Amador says, "it's scary you know, you gotta worry about everything and now you gotta worry about something like curtains, you know, it's crazy... I'll check and yeah if it does I'll change it. I don't want my daughter around that."
Walmart, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Sears and K-mart also carry some of the contaminated curtains.
If you're going to buy one, check the labels. Many will say whether or not they are PVC free.
The EPA says companies are working on phasing out PVC.
