You Could be Swimming in a New Aquatic Center in Yakima Soon
YAKIMA, Wash-You could be swimming at a new water center soon. Yakima Parks and Recreation are in the process of making pans for a new aquatic center.
The city only has two public pools open. Denise Nichols manager of Yakima Parks and Recreation says they are in need of a new water facility.
"Yakima is a prime place to have an aquatic center- the demographics, the 300 days of sunshine and the lack of aquatic facilities in town," says Denise Nichols.
Details of the aquatic center are still in the works.
The public will decide whether it will be indoor or indoor and outdoor. If the center is indoor only it will cost $24 million dollars. An indoor and outdoor center will cost $34 million. How the center will be paid for is still being discussed. One option is to raise sales tax by .1%.
A City Council meeting will be held on July 1st. More of the details will be determined by then.
The city is still deciding when you will be able to vote on whether the aquatic center should be built.
