WAPATO,Wash.(AP) - A small Yakima Valley town where police have destroyed five dogs in six months has banned pit bulls and some other breeds.

The Wapato town council adopted the ban unanimously Monday. It applies to pit bull terriers or mixes of pit bulls and other breeds, including mastiffs, Rottweilers and American bulldogs.

The ordinance includes exceptions for trained service dogs and for those certified by the American Kennel Association as Canine Good Citizens. Violators risk fines of $250 fine for the first offense and $500 for each subsequent offense.

This month police shot a dog that was chasing people and cars - the fifth time in six months a dog has been destroyed in Wapato.

Last year a 4-year-old girl was badly mauled by dogs in an alley behind her home.
