A Few Reasons for Washington's Unemployment Rate Jump
KENNEWICK, Wash. - Washignton's unemployment rate is up, but a state economist claims that doesn't mean more people are out of a job.
The state unemployment rate recently jumped up to 5.3%.
However, a spokesperson from the state employment security department said that number is deceiving.
Some people did lose their jobs, but there are also simply more people out there just looking for work. They also count as unemployed.
A lot of it has to do with the nation's economy.
"We can't help but be affected by what's going on in the nation. The nation's economy, there's been a down turn. It's catching up to us now," said Caitlin Cormier, Spokesperson, Washington Employment Security Dept.
The state spokesperson said it's too soon to tell if Washington's job market is in a downward trend. Right now it's unemployment rate is still lower than the national average.
