McCain Proposes 300 Million Dollar Government Prize for New Auto

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) - Senator John McCain hopes some cold hard cash
will help solve the nation's energy woes.
The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting thinks the
government should offer a 300-million-dollar prize to the person
who can develop an automobile battery that leapfrogs existing
technology.
The prize would equate to $1 for every man, woman and child in
the United States. McCain calls that "a small price to pay for
helping to break the back of our oil dependency."
In a speech today at Fresno State University in California,
McCain also will propose stiffer fines for automakers who skirt
existing fuel-efficiency standards and call for incentives to
increase the use of domestic and foreign ethanol.
