KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Rising gas prices are causing more people to steal gas. We've heard of people filling up and just leaving, siphoning gas, and even puncturing gas tanks. Now, thieves are getting a little more creative.
Thieves take the license plate off another car, put it on theirs, go to a gas station, fill up, and drive away. If you pump and run, cameras at gas stations or other people around often get the license plate number and report that to police. By the time the police are looking for that plate number, the thief would have taken the phony plate off. Since the thieves temporarily have someone else's license plate on their car, it's a lot harder to track them down.
Many of us don't check to make sure our license plates are on our cars every day, so make sure you take a quick peak before driving away.
