Washington Department of Wildlife Set to Capture and Tag Geese
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Beginning Tuesday, the Department of Wildlife will be capturing up to 500 Canadian geese in six different Eastern Washington locations.
The geese are currently molting and unable to fly, so the Wildlife Department will use boats and mobile trapping devices to catch them. Their goal is to get a better understand of the migration patterns and population levels of the geese.
The trappings will take place at various locations in the Tri-Cities, Yakima, and Spokane, as well as Lake Roosevelt, Sprague Lake, and the Upper Columbia River near Kettle Falls.
Each goose will be tagged with a numbered aluminum band. Wildlife officials says they are not sure if the geese migrate at all. They say goose-hunting regulations could be loosened in order to control the population.
Wildlife officials will work to tag the geese until July 10th.
