TOPPENISH, Wash-- Grocery shoppers were in for quite a surprise tonight as they stepped outside the Toppenish Safeway to find dozens of cop cars and a messy scene of smashed vehicles.
According to the sherrif's office a sting operation involving the suspects in a Lincoln SUV went bad. The driver of the SUV took off and started raming vehicles within the parking lot. Shots were fired and one of the suspects was hit.
More officers arrived at the scene and quickly roped off the area. Two suspects were in hand cuffs. The suspect who was shot was being worked on by paramedics.
"I think the police shot at him because he wouldn't stop going he kept raming everything in sight. Just a bad day to come to the store," said Penny Johnson.
Penny and her children watched the scene unfold from inside the store, safely away from her vehicle that was hit by the suv. Besides the suspect hauled away by ambulance two other suspects were taken from the scene. And Penny's wasn't the only vehicle caught in the fray, several others received extensive damage.
The Yakima County Sherriff's office is investigating the case.
