Governor Donates Money to Help Struggling Food Banks

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash- $200,000 were donated to Washington food banks by Governor Chris Gregoire.   The grant will be distributed between 350 food banks.

St. Vincent food bank in Yakima says they could use the grant.

Food donations are down because the price of fuel is too high.  It costs more to transfer the food from factories to the food bank.  Also, St. Vincent has had to cut out some staples, such as flour and sugar because the price is too high.

And rising prices mean more people are in need of the food bank.  St. Vincent sees about 15 new people each day and serve 200 families each week.

They have also seen a 57% increase in senior citizens in the past three years.  One senior citizen, Melvin McEwed, says he is on a fixed income and can't afford food prices.  He says if it wasn't for the food bank he wouldn't be able to eat.

St. Vincent food bank says they hope the grant will help them pay for fuel costs, but until then they will do the best they can to serve the hungry.
