YAKIMA, Wash-After years of Highway 12 eroding, Washington State Department of Transportation workers are now moving the Naches River away from the highway.
Over 30,000 tons of huge rocks will be moved into the river to create a trench that will keep the river from hitting and eroding US Highway 12. Then big machines will cross the river to dig a diversion channel before planting trees along the highway to prevent further erosion.
The river will be moved slowly to keep mud down and to protect wildlife.
The project should be completed by Thanksgiving. And is estimated to cost about $3 million.
The right lane of US Highway 12 will be closed from 5am to 4pm for the construction.
