Van Fire Bridges to a House Leaving One Yakima Family Without a Home
YAKIMA, Wash-- The home is rented by John Estes and his family. He had worked on the '87 Ford Astro van a few days earlier, because of electrical problems.
Now his family is without a home tonight, the house severely damaged and not safe. The van caught fire this afternoon. Estes saw the smoke and tried to stop the fire with a garden hose.
But it quickly jumped to the house and then the attic, making the fire difficult to put out.
Seeing the smoke as they drove west on Mead Avenue Jared Hiebert and his father stopped to help. "But by the time the fire department got here the back of the house was on fire and I ran in there to make sure there was no one else in there," said Hiebert.
Everyone made it safely out of the home as the Yakima Fire Department responded with four fire engines and one truck. Pulling the ceiling out and cutting holes in the siding firefighters were able to put out the fire, but the damage was already done. Investigators are still trying to pin-point the exact cause of the van fire.
