14-year-old Boy Crashes Driving Dad to Safety after Gun Accident
FINLEY, Wash.- A man is alive thanks to some quick thinking, and driving, by his 14-year-old son.
Benton County Sheriff's deputies say the two were taking target practice in a rural area of Finley when the shotgun the man was loading accidentally went off, shooting him in the leg.
They didn't have a cell phone, so the 14-year-old helped his dad to the car, then got behind the wheel himself.
He only made it so far before spinning out in some gravel, and getting stuck in a ditch.
The boy then ran to a nearby home and used a phone to call for help.
"Yeah, he did a good job of trying to drive. Illegal for him to drive of course, but, trying to get his dad to the hospital. He was trying to be a hero is what it comes down to," said Dep. Shane Benningfield.
The man was safely transported to Kennewick General Hospital.
When deputies searched the car they found five loaded weapons inside, but say they were in legal possession of the guns, including two rifles, two pistols and the shotgun.
