DETROIT, Mich. - Heavy rains and strong winds delayed the start of the first heats of Detroit's Gold Cup unlimited hydroplane racing.  When the rain cleared, it was Jean Theoret and the U-37 Beacon Plumbing running away with the first heat.

Heat 1A

The U-37 Beacon Plumbing had been fighting gear box problems in the qualifying rounds that blew oil everywhere.  They got it fixed and Theoret went out and ran away from the field.

  4. U-25 Jarvis Water and Fire Repair - Ken Muscatel
  5. U-50 Spirit of the Navy - Brian Perkins

Despite opening up an 8 boat lead, the U-37 seemed to labor a bit in the lap.  Theoret shut down the boat as soon as it crossed the finish line, opting to have it towed back to the pits.

Heat 1B

Jeff Bernard in the U-5 grabbed lane one and led the field across the start line and held the lead through the first two turns.  He never looked back as he held onto the lead for the rest of the way.

Teammate U-7 Mike Allen found himself battling it out for second with U-10 and David Bryant.  It was a tight race the whole way.  On the final lap, Bryant made his move and passed up Allen. The U-3 Chrysler Jeep had been fighting turbo charger problems, but made it to the starting gun and made it through all three laps of Heat 1B, nearly catching Mike Allen at the end.
