Boating Safety is Important Not Only For You, But Also Your Pet
RICHLAND, Wash-- Safety on the river starts with wearing a life jacket, but have you ever considered putting a life jacket on your dog? A lot of pet owners don't realize the danger your dog could face if it were to fall out of a boat.
Paw's Natural Pet Emporium in Richland sells life jackets for all sized dogs with flaps to keep their heads above water. The store owner, Dorothy Hunter, says it's very important for boating safety to put a life jacket on your dog.
If your dog were to fall into the water, it could hurt its legs and the current could be dangerous.
"It's very easy for the dogs to take in water and possibly drown. Also, they get exhausted very fast and they tend to either try to swim back to the boat or go to the shore," said Hunter.
Hunter explains that you should spend time teaching your dog to swim by going in the water and helping him get used to the current. Also, when playing catch with your dog, don't throw the ball out too far because it could get tired easily.
