YAKIMA, Wash-Washington State commissions took a bus tour today to look at affordable housing in Yakima.
Commissioners say although Yakima housing costs have gone up by 17% in the past 16 months, Yakima still has more affordable housing than other areas in Washington.
The Washington State Financing Commission has built more than $160-million worth of affordable housing in Yakima. And they plan to build more.
The Executive Director says they are working for you and listening to your housing needs.
"Mostly what we try and do is respond to what local communities identify as their need and then we try and bring the financing in to help solve that problem," says Kim Herman, Executive Director of the Washington State Financing Commission.
Kim Herman says the big problem in Yakima is we don't have enough work-force housing. People can't afford housing that is close to their jobs and are now driving far distances to work.
The Financing Commission is now working to solve that problem we well as build housing for seniors and farm workers.
