TRI-CITIES 2008: Kip Brown gets his first ride in an Unlimited Hydroplane in the U-17

KENNEWICK, Wash. - "The boat's ready," said U-17's Nate Brown from Our Gang Racing.  Nate drove the U-17 in its inaugural season last year, but has turned over the reins to nephew Kip Brown for the 2008 season.

Kip got a chance to take his first ride in the boat today, then competed int he Dash for Cash LIVE on KNDU-TV.  He'll need to get enough seat time - including laps over 130 mph - on Saturday to qualify official as an Unlimited driver.

"Undriveable this morning," said Brown after his second run.  He had trouble keeping the boat on the course.  The FormulaBoats team let the U-17 team borrow the rudder off of Mike Allen's U-7 boat and it made a world of difference.  "Much, much mre driveable," he said.

"I'm still getting a handle on the boat," he said, "but I feel like we're going to be able to run it this weekend."

The plan for Columbia Cup 2008?  "Keep my nose clean," he said.  "Get myself more comfortable with the boat."
