YAKIMA, Wash. - Alfedo Marte and Anthony Smith had RBI singles, but the Eugene Emeralds collected 14 hits in a 9-3 win over the Yakima Bears Friday night at Yakima County Stadium.
The Emeralds scored first on a sacrifice fly by Angel Mercado. They added two more in the third on an RBI double by Blake Tekotte and a sacrifice fly by Sawyer Carroll.
The Bears tied the game with a three-run third, scoring all three with two outs. Marte and Smith strung together back-to-back RBI singles. They then pulled off a double-steal to score another run, with Smith getting in a rundown between first and second, and Marte racing home ahead of the throw to tie the game.
Eugene retook the lead for good with two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Jeudy Valdez, who also scored later on a wild pitch. The Emeralds added a run in the fifth on Carrol's RBI single to center. Eugene broke the game open with a three-run eighth on a two-run triple to right by Daniel Robertson and an RBI single to left by Tekotte.The Bears host the Emeralds in the second of a five-game series Saturday night, with Pat McAnaney on the mound for Yakima at 7:05 p.m.
