Tribe Opposes New Port Gamble Dock

Posted: Updated:
PORT GAMBLE, Wash. (AP) - The state Fish and Wildlife Department
has revoked a permit for a proposed dock at Port Gamble because of
objections from the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe.
The department says the 165-foot pier could be considered a
marina, which would not be allowed. The tribe says it would
threaten herring spawning beds.
The pier is proposed by the Olympic Property Group on the site
of a former mill.
The company says it will appeal the permit because the pier is
needed to restore water access at Port Gamble. Company president
Jon Rose says, "We're not going to stop being a port town."
