Dave Villwock (Auburn, Wash.) and the Ellstrom Elam Plus presents Amos W. Hoss used his last qualifying session to unseat both Jeff Bernard in the U-5 Formulaboats.com and Dave Bryant in the Hoss Mortage Investors as the fastest qualifier for this weekend's Chevrolet Cup at Seafair.
Bernard (Kent, Wash) took to the 2-mile course late in the afternoon after having two of his top speeds taken away earlier due to N2 and fuel violations. He then averaged 151.521 to knock Bryant off the perch. Villwock came back minutes later to run 153.022 on Lake Washington.
Bernard has never been the fastest qualifier for an unlimited hydroplane race though he has one victory. He took the 2008 Indiana Governor's Cup in early July for his first career win.
Bryant (Mesa, Ariz.), the 41-year old driver of the Hoss Mortgage Investors boat, averaged 148.576 mph during the first morning qualifying session and also looked like he might be the fastest qualifier for the first time in his career until the final qualifying session came to a close.
Villwock was the fastest qualifier last week in Tri-Cities, Wash. for the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup.
Only one of the 14 boats in the pits did not qualify. The U-48 Albert Lee presents Miss Lakeridge Paving with David Williams (Seattle, Wash.) at the controls.
Chip Hanauer (Seattle, Wash.) qualified the U-787 The Boeing 787 Salute to Seafair 134.586 also qualified but it will not race in this weekend's event.
There is one more qualifying session Saturday morning.
