2008 San Diego Bayfair World Series of Power Boat Racing announces title sponsor
For the past several years, there have been serious worries about the future of Unlimited Hydroplane racing in San Diego. When major sponsors weren't found, the Bayfair organizing committee had to pull back dramatically on spending, including not paying the up-front appearance fees for the Unlimited Hydroplanes to run.
But what a difference a year makes. Boeing came on board as a major sponsor and this weekend, the San Diego Union Tribune was announced a title sponsor.
Here's the official release from ABRA:
Race Marketing Partners and Thunderboats Unlimited Club are proud to announce The San Diego Union Tribune as the Title Sponsor for the 2008 San Diego Bayfair World Series of Power Boat Racing.
"This has been an exciting year for us and to have San Diego come together with great corporate partners is just one more sign of the sports strength, "Sam Cole, Chairman of the American Power Boat Racing Association. "The racing fleet has been the most competitive in the sports' history and to have our race sites develop these partnerships is another step in the growth process of unlimited hydroplane racing.
"Race Marketing Partners found a perfect match of sponsors with The San Diego Union Tribune and their other major corporate partner The Boeing Company."
San Diego has been host to Unlimited Hydroplane Racing since 1964 and the 2 ½ mile Mission Bay race course is the fastest course on the circuit.
"It is important for this sport to have a presence in major sports markets," said Cole. "And San Diego fits that profile perfect."
Both Bayfair's Thunderboats Unlimited Club and The San Diego Union Tribune have a long history of community support. This will be the 42nd running of the unlimited race in San Diego.
