Team Preview: West Valley Rams

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA - When you play for West Valley, people expect big things. So last year's 2-8 record doesn't sit well with the young men wearing the Rams jerseys.
"The self esteem around here was low," says sr. RB/DL Aaron Kennedy. "We just go to prove to everybody else in the city that we're back, we're West Valley. We can play football."
"The whole community gets involved," explained Sr. QB/CB Joe Wallace. "You hear about it every day when you walk in the grocery store. 'Hey how's the team looking? How's everyone looking?' It's important not just for the team, but for the whole community, for us to have a good year this year."
Head Coach Scott Ditter enters his second year on the sidelines. He has been impressed with the hard work in the offseason.
"I think a 2-8 record is a motivator in itself, said Ditter. "When you go through a tough experience that many perceive as a negative, I think that's motivated a lot of our kids to want to work, because in West Valley that's just not what we do."
Ditter is excited about the new year. Seven starters return on offense and eight return on defense. The team is till young with juniors making up the majority of the roster, but having an experienced sr. QB is a plus.
"I think last year's experience will be really good for him,' said Ditter. Ditter added that they won't need to spend as much practice time teaching Wallace the offense,
The coaches are tired of stinking on the field, and in the locker room as well.
"Coaches instated a rule where we have to wash all our gear at least once a week," joked Kennedy. "Some of the guys are disappointed about that."
The season kicks off September 5 at rival East Valley.
