Team Preview: Connell

CONNELL, Wash. - Former Connell Eagle star Spencer Hadley is at BYU, already on the second team as a true freshman linebacker.  Without Hadley, Connell looks to maintain it's dominance, and take care of some unfinished business.
In 2006 they lost the state championship game by a a few yards to Meridian. In 2007 it was the rival Royal Knights denying them at the title game.
"It's not fun watching us lose two years in a row," said sr. RB Carlis Bailon Schubert. "Definitely motivation."
Connell's recent gridiron fixtures Hadley and Brett Clyde have moved on.
"When you go 38-3 the last three years, you knew you had good players," said coach Wayne Riner. "This year, were so young in so many spots."
He's right. Just 3 offensive and 4 defensive starters return from last years 13-1 squad.
"We're gonna have to step up a lot because we got new starters," said Schubert. "But we're definitely contenders for a state championship game."
Riner says Schubert will be relied on heavily this year, and Cole Thompson will do great things on both lines.
"He's probably one of the best 1A lineman in the state," said Riner.
"It's fun out there," said Thompson. "I just like to hit people like everyone else."
Connell opens Friday night at Othello.
"We're just gonna have to stay healthy and get better," said Riner. "If we do that I really feel we'll be a playoff team."
