Suspect in custody after leading police on pursuit
SPOKANE, Wash. - A man was arrested Friday night after crashing his vehicle into several cars and leading police on a pursuit.
The 20-minute pursuit began at Garland and Pittsburg when a Spokane Police officer witnessed a hit-and-run collision. When the officer tried to stop the suspect, he fled the scene and within seconds of fleeing had hit another parked car and an occupied vehicle.
The Spokane County Sheriff's helicopter was already in flight searching for a missing ATV rider and immediately joined the pursuit.
During the pursuit police officers were forced to back off for the safety of the public and let the Spokane County Sheriff's helicopter follow the suspect. Police say the suspect was driving with his headlights off, and running red lights and stop signs. At one point the driver tried to intentionally hit a police car.
The suspect crashed near Shadle Park High School and despite a badly-damaged car he continued to flee from police.
Officers surrounded the suspect when he crashed for a second time into a construction ditch at Driscoll and Heroy. Again the suspect fled on foot, running through backyards in the Shadle Park area for a short time before being arrested on Hoffman just east of Driscoll.
Police say at one point the man came close to hitting a police car involved in the pursuit.
22-year old John Luna, of Spokane, was taken into custody and charged with three counts of Hit and Run, Assault on a Police Officer in the 2nd degree, one count of Eluding police and Possession of a Stolen Car.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
