Crime in Kennewick Increases in August

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Kennewick Police have seen an increase in crime during the month of August.

Residential burglaries have increased the most from August 2007 to August of this year.  There was a 62% increase, from 121 residential burglaries last year to 196 so far this year.

There were more people who are stealing things out of cars this August, 41 this year compared to only 30 last year. However, the number of people stealing cars went down from July to August.

Kennewick police officers say many of these incidents are simply crimes of opportunity and people not taking the proper precautions.  Officer Tony Valdez says, "Almost all cases, at least 55% of the time, burglaries or car prowls occur because people don't lock their vehicle or their homes. "  He says an easy way to remember it is, "If you leave it, lock it."
