SEATTLE, Wash. -- The University of Washington announced its plans today to establish a permanent name for its live dog mascot.

"Through our discussion with fans over the last few years, it's become obvious that name recognition is an issue with our live mascot program," said Brad McDavid, director of athletic bands who oversees the live mascot as part of the school's overall band and spirit program. "In looking at other universities, a permanent name that lives on seems to be one of the key ingredients in building a strong identity for the live mascot.

"The pending retirement of Spirit, (officially: Whitepaw's Arlut Spirit of Gold Dust), presented the athletic department with the ideal opportunity to make the change and we knew we wanted to have a way for all Husky fans to participate in the process"

Fans will have two opportunities to be involved with determining the new mascot name, which will be unveiled following Spirit's retirement at the UCLA football game on November 15.

Fans can submit nominations during a nomination period which will run from today through October 9. A nomination committee that includes students, various University representatives, alumni, donors and others will then develop a short list that will be presented to fans for an online vote, beginning on October 20.

"We are definitely anticipating that some of the past mascot names will be submitted for consideration as well," McDavid said.

Previous mascots over the years have been named Frosty, Wasky, Ski, Denali, King Chinook, Regent Denali, Sundodger, King Redoubt and Prince Redoubt.
