KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The price of regular gas at the Safeway gas station in Kennewick, is $3.55 a gallon. Just last month AAA reported gas was $3.89 a gallon.
Experts say we can expect an even bigger drop in the next couple weeks. That's all thanks to the price of oil.
Oil is down to $87 a barrel as of Monday, down from $147 in July. Staff at the Washignton Attorney's General's Office say the price of crude oil has a great impact on prices at the pump.
In February it was responsible for about 65% of the cost per gallon.
"Assuming that other components such as the retail marketing or transportation costs don't eat up that change, we would still expect the overall price of gas to come down," said Kristin Alexander, with the Washington Attorney General's Office.
Compared to Spokane or Seattle, the price of gas in the Tri-Cities tends to take a little longer to go down. Staff at the Attorney General's Office say that will depend on transportation costs, and also retail prices.
The average price in the Tri-Cities for a gallon of regular is $3.57. That's still up from the national average of $3.48 a gallon.
