Central Washington Moves Up 2 Spots to 5th in Regional Poll

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Central Washington University football team, which is one of three teams in its region with an undefeated record against Division II opponents, has climbed two spots in this week's official NCAA Division II "Super Regional Four" poll to fifth, the NCAA announced Monday.

The Wildcats, 6-1 overall including 6-0 against Division II foes, jumped two spots from seventh to fifth following a 50-28 victory over archrival Western Washington at the sixth annual Wells Fargo Battle in Seattle, presented by Comcast, on Saturday at Qwest Field. Central's only loss this season was a last-second defeat against NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision member Montana on Sept. 27.

Joining Central Washington with undefeated records against Division II teams are the top two teams in the region -- West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian. Both of those schools also have 6-0 records against Division II competition heading into their head-to-head matchup at Canyon, Texas, this coming Saturday.

The top four teams in the Super Regional 4 remained the same from the initial poll of the season. Northwest Missouri State is ranked third once again this week, with Pittsburg State (Kan.) listing fourth. CWU moved into fifth, followed by Central Missouri, which lost to Northwest Missouri State last weekend. Texas A&M-Kingsville rose one spot from eighth to seventh, as did Tarleton State (Texas) from ninth to eighth. Newcomers to the regional poll this week are Washburn (Kan.) and Nebraska-Omaha in ninth and tenth, respectively.

The "Super Regional Four" is comprised of member schools in the traditional South Central and West Regions. Conferences represented in the super regional are the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), the Lone Star Conference (LSC), and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). With just five football-playing members the GNAC does not have an "earned access" berth for the NCAA Division II playoffs like the LSC and MIAA do.

The top six teams in each of the super regions following the conclusion of the regular season will qualify for the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Central Washington appeared in the postseason last year after an 8-2 regular-season record and 6-2 finish in the now-defunct North Central Conference, and the Wildcats advanced to the national quarterfinals.

CWU continues its road work this week, taking its 5-0 GNAC record to Arcata, Calif., to face Humboldt State (2-5, 0-4 GNAC).
