WHL News: Portland Winterhawks sold, will remain in Portland

Calgary, AB -- The Western Hockey League Board of Governors today have approved the transfer of the Portland Winter Hawks ownership to Mr. Bill Gallacher of Avenir Capital Corporation.  Based in Calgary, Mr. Gallacher is not scheduled to take over control of the Portland WHL franchise until the closing of the sale is concluded later this month.  The approval to transfer the franchise to Mr. Gallacher included a condition that the Winter Hawks franchise remains in Portland.  The Portland Winter Hawks franchise has operated in Portland since the 1976-77 season.

CHL Drug Education and Anti-Doping

In other news, the WHL also announced that the CHL Drug Education and Anti-Doping program will be fully implemented this season with random testing of all WHL players scheduled to begin in November.  The Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League will be implementing the anti-doping program for the first time this season while the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is entering its third season of testing its players.

WHL to launch new website

The WHL will be launching a brand new website in mid-November, bringing a new look and fresh features to the widely used www.whl.ca .  The new www.whl.ca will feature a prominent video sectioned hosted on the home page of the website to allow users easier access to WHL WEB TV and video.  It will also feature a WHL photo gallery stocked with current and historical photos easily available for viewing along with enhancements to all the current WHL website features that users have become accustom to on www.whl.ca .  The new www.whl.ca will launch on Monday, November 10th, 2008.
