SEATTLE (AP) - Bail was set at $4 million today for a man suspected of fatally stabbing a woman in a car on Interstate 5 in Seattle.
Forty-2-year-old Christel David Murphy was arrested yesterday for investigation of murder in the death of 42-year-old Jane Wa Kariuki.
Police say Murphy and Kariuki, his girlfriend of 5 years, were arguing in the car. They say Murphy, sitting in the rear passenger seat, grabbed Kariuki from behind in a headlock and then stabbed her repeatedly in the chest, neck and face.
Investigators say a man driving the car pulled over and called 911 as Murphy got out, threw down the knife, lit a cigarette and sat on a guardrail until police arrived and arrested him. Kariuki was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she died.
The assault occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near the Northgate shopping mall.
