Yakama Tribe Considers Licensing Farm Workers

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - A Yakama tribal member says the tribe
should require a license or permit for guest farmworkers.
Former tribal councilman Wendell Hannigan says he's concerned
about crime and the growing number of undocumented workers on the
1,900 square mile reservation. Its orchards, vineyards and hop
fields lure a large migrant work force each year.
A spokeswoman with the federal Immigration and Customs
Enforcement agency in Seattle, Lorie Dankers, told the Yakima
Herald-Republic that the Yakamas probably would not have the
authority to enforce U.S. immigration laws.
