YAKIMA--The end of October marks the end of harvest season. Local growers are picking the last of this year's apple crops. At Kershaw Fruit they think the harvest is above their estimate, and also surpasses last year's disappointing crop.
They hope to be finished picking the fuji apples by Tuesday. After that it will be time to shut the fields down until the spring.
"[We will] start getting ready for winter, blow out all the irrigation lines and spread out some mouse bait," Antonio Quintana said. "Then we're probably going to do some training on young trees."
The winter preparations will last a few weeks, until it gets too cold to prune the trees.
