Extra Patrols During Halloween Weekend To Keep Trick-Or-Treaters Safe
YAKIMA--Halloween is here, and police are working to make sure everyone's safe. Extra officers will patrol Yakima County roads this Halloween weekend.
Halloween's not usually a big DUI night here in Yakima, but a state trooper tells me they try to be extra-careful when the holiday falls on a friday like this year.
Yakima County's going to be the site of an X-52 patrol this weekend. That means officers from local police departments along with state patrol will be setting up extra DUI checks in town, and also on the highways.
A state trooper said they arrest an average of three drunk drivers each Halloween. But DUI numbers are higher on the weekends, and officers want to make sure Halloween and Friday night do not make the situation worse.
"We're gonna be out there in force looking for drunk drivers and trying to protect all the pedestrians that are gonna be out trick or treating or enjoying Halloween."
Officers say trick or treaters should still take extra precautions to avoid accidents. They say you should stay away from areas with lots of vehicle traffic, wear bright or reflective clothing, and make sure costumes fit well.
It's also a good idea to review traffic safety with your kids and bring along a flashlight.
