HARTFORD, CT (AP) - Washington is one of 40 states that have reached an agreement with the online service Craigslist to crack down on ads for prostitution on its web sites.
The agreement calls for anyone who posts an "erotic services" ad to be required to provide a working phone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card.
The web site will provide that information to law enforcement if subpoenaed.
State officials say the new phone and fee requirements should reduce the number of postings for illegal activity, and give law enforcement a road map to prosecute violations of the law.
Craigslist has also agreed to sue 14 software and Internet companies that help people who post erotic service ads to circumvent web site defenses.
